Reconstruction of the PIIr. form is difficult, because Skt. -th- points to a root-final laryngeal, whereas Iranian reflexes (especially, YAv. acc.sg. as-ca) cannot be reconciled with it. No cognates seem to require this laryngeal and some of them clearly contradict it (e.g., Lat. os). It is therefore likely that the Sanskrit form is secondary. An option would be to assume that the laryngeal reflects the plural / collective *h3est-h2, or, less probable, that the Skt. form is analogical after sákthi-.
(cited by: A. Lubotsky)
Almut Hintze reconstructs it as PIE *h₂ost-h₂/n- .
